1923 Feb. 2nd Friday

A stormy cold day and threatened to snow but eve better but so cold. Will & Jake came out and worked all day feeding stock so had dinner here at home. I staid at folks and they came back in eve. Dave and I went to depot with Mr. B. Ellsworth as he took Aunt Louisa, Thelma & Dave Dorian to train.I wrote biography [of] Papa’s life.

1933 Feb. 2nd Thursday

Cloudy early morning but clear, cold in day and N.W. breeze. The men chored and Wm got a load of hay at Moore Creek and put some horses on Moore Creek that were at Elshires. Will went to Tates and he and Mr. went to Wood to have bills printed for sale and Will home in p.m. in time to chore. I got meals and mended and sewed a little.

Was a beau-ti-ful day until in p.m. began to cloud but sun set bright. This is CandleMas or Feast Of Blessed Virgin. Ground Hog saw his shadow so back for 6 weeks [of] winter. I got meals, made 3 mince pies, laid down in p.m. W.D. and Will chored, worked at roof and east side Wagner Barn for W.D. finished barn. Will went to Whiting Store, got some mail and groceries. His leg near ankle pains, this is where varicose veins last treated.

Candlemas Day, Feast of Blessed Virgin Mary

Cloudy most of day after sun came up and went into clouds and some rain and snow at McKees this midday but none here. Men fed cattle hay and Will and I went in our car to Carter via west road and waited a long time at Andrea’s Garage to have Mr. Test our lights but he no come so we went to Winner, left our Electric Percolator to get the Fuse and heating unit fixed at Winner Gas & Electric. Paid Real Estate Taxes. Got some things at Outlaw and groceries. The Outlaw Store is fixed different. The Serve Yourself Counters are North and South with units for Freezer Foods. Fresh Fruits & vegetables are across North Side and West, and Meat at S.W. Corner. Rest of East half [of] store [is] Notions and Dry Goods and nothing to obstruct view of all the goods. We met Lew and Bus McKee going home in their pick-up, came to weld things, bought Pork Roast and Sausage for Us and Wales. Looked stormy but no snow here.

1923 Feb. 1st Thursday

A bright cold day, very cold. Will didn’t come out as Papa’s Funeral at 10:30 a.m. St. Mary’s Church. All of us children present and Mamma had too bad cold to go to funeral so Aunt Louisa staid with her and Mrs. C. Nelson, Mrs. O. Ernest, Aldena Woolhiser & Elsie Nelson & Thelma Gracia staid to get dinner, also Fred Jr. The American Legion, Civil War & Spanish American veterans had charge funeral. Papa was buried beside Mary [Harriet’s sister, who died of the 1918 flu] in Catholic cemetery near Spencer. Nellie & baby, Ed & Tom went back on eve train. Will & Jake came out to chore.

1933 Feb. 1st Wednesday

Bright, chilly day. I got meals and rested in p.m. and played cards in eve with boys. The men chored and Will & Narvin went to Ora Daywitts and Wm & Noble Moore brought in horses. Roy Hutchins came at noon and he helped separate horses also that Noble and Wm took to Moore Creek. John Wisenberger here at noon. Ben Clausen here in a.m. and he ordered a pair of overalls in our order to Montgomery Ward, St. Paul.

1943 Feb. 1st Monday

Was 8 above in morning and got to 44 in p.m. Sun shone all day but snow on ground from Saturday night so going fast. I got meals, laid down in p.m. for I finished mixing mince-meat. I cooked beef Saturday and put apples, raisins, spices, salt, pepper, white syrup, Molasses, a little brown and white sugar, lemon juice, butter and will cook it slowly until apples are tender. Will got cream at Furreys yesterday so we have jello and bananas today. Wm Van Epps came from Gehlsens at sun-rise in Gehlsen’s car as his no go, after breakfast and choring he went back to get it and Will fed cattle so they worked at Shed at Wagner Place, got roofing. Elise & Billie staid at Gehlsens. They finished North side.

Bright, nice day. Men fed cattle stack hay and then Will came in to sweep floors so I had to move out of his way, got blurry eyes so had to put cold rags on my back and neck and across eyes and temples and got over it, then I wrote in diary, played solitaire and Will and I Canasta in p.m. and eve. Wales staid home this day, at least no see them.

Jan. 31, 1923: All arrangements for Papa’s Funeral about completed

A fair day but colder. We are still up town and boys come home to chore morn. & eve. Nellie & baby Fred Jr., Tom Whiting, Mr. & Mrs. D. Dorian & Thelma Garcia came on 1 o’clock. All arrangements for Papa[‘s] Funeral about completed.

N.W. wind very cold, cloudy and some snow but quit before sun-down. I got meals and gathered cobs. The men chored and went to Moore Creek and fixed fence and hay-stack, took lunch and Noble Moore helped. Ben Clausen and Murrel (Red) Couser here at mid-day. Mr. & Mrs. John Gaul came in a wagon and I sent them to Will on Moore Creek and they went to Ralph Walton Home to sign for R.F.C. Relief. Narvin Boyd came for the night from Sundquists.

Was 14 above in a.m. got to 30 in p.m. but I had a cold in head and it ached so staid home and Will to Harry Furrey’s to tell them Cecil Roundy, Valentine, said cow Harry got at Red Sale had abortion. Will said one of these Holsteins lost her calf yesterday. He came home to chore for W.D. is at Gehlsens to Ralph’s Farewell dinner. He went back to Ft. Riley, Kans. this eve. I had lunch at noon, made Jello so we had a fill in eve.

Foggy, Frosty East Wind. Sun shone awhile in p.m. Dan and Family to Valentine to get Pick Up Springs and Shifting Lever fixed, home before Dark. Will cleaned kitchen and got mail and fixed Floor Lamp, put Scotch Tape on the Plastic Cover of Shade to hold the torn spots and I wrote in diary, sewed a little on everyday dresses, got eats, played in eve some solitaire and Will and I played Canasta.

January 9, 1933: Jeanette had a beautiful last rites

1923, Jan. 9th Tuesday.

Clouds passed over most of day and at noon looked real stormy but brighter in p.m. and a beautiful latter part p.m. Will cleaned barn and around hog-house and took Molls spreader home and talked to Mr. Barden when he stopped for water for his auto and brought mail also to Mr. A. J. R— and Robert on their way to town with hogs. I washed Clothes and hung to dry which most did also cleaned cream-can and mopped kitchen floor.

1933 Jan. 9th Monday.

Bright, nice day. Will chored and helped Roy haul 3 loads of hay and was choring again in eve when Wm and I got back from Jeanette Whiting Haukaas’s Funeral at St. Francis at 2 p.m. She was buried near Phoebe Cecelia, her mother. Lemoyne staid last night and he and I left via Hutchins, where we got Mrs. and Clyde, left Clyde at Wagners, where Mrs. was ready but no room so she kept Clyde, then to Wheelers where we got Mrs. and the flowers, on to Armbrusters, where Mary, Josephine and Rita went along. Stopped at Roundy’s, waited for Louise & Harry, Dorothy Mae and Harley, so they no come until late so Lemoyne and Gerald Furrey went to see what [was] wrong but they finally came and Dorothy Mae’s arm was hurt so left Harley at Roundy’s, on to Rosebud Hospital where her arm was X Rayed, no bone broken, we all got to St. Francis O.K., dinner at Jake’s, Funeral, looked at Girls part in school, on to hospital, viewed it and home late eve. Lemoyne went home with Ed and Family and Armbruster girls staid at Mission. Josephine & Rita went with Thomas, Sadie and Mr. Armbruster to Mission after Funeral. All of Whitings there but Tom, Myself, Nellie, Ed, Dave, Jake, Wm and Louise and Bordeaux Aunts there Leona, Mary, Minnie and Uncle Ben and Grandma Pawnee and all of Haukaas relatives but Oscar’s Family and this family Lloyd was there. Jeanette had a beautiful last rites and many other relatives present. Nell Larmer went to Funeral with Mary Brandon and back to Hospital with us.

1943 Jan. 9th Saturday.

Was bright, nice day, but I have such a cough that I only got meals, laid down, washed new stocking and sheets and Handerchieves. Will hung them out and he chored, painted windows, washed his hair and yesterday his feet. He also visited with Carl Aamodt and Cecil Sherfey of Rosebud Civil Service Employers, they came to see our Bull, Domino Jr. W.D. chored, got in some calves that got to their mothers and put [them] in barn, cleaned coop and barn, got the trailer that was at Shed [Wagner], went to Wood to buy lumber for his shed.

Bright day. Men gave cattle hay up My Creek and put chains on Tractor, The M, and Dan’s making a sled for Calvin when he can get outside. Usual work and solitaire for me. I made out an order to Sears and Wards and Will mailed them. Material for Front room and Double Door and Curtain Plastic Rods & Hooks for Kitchen & North Porch Double Door and several Other things. Never see Betty and Calvin since weather more winterish.
