    But it’s probably more important in this diary to realize the nature of Ray Tate’s illness. It’s probably mentioned elsewhere, but he had polio. One of my earliest memories is of Tate’s coming to our house so Ray could take a bath. Our house, built in 1950, had running water. Tate’s house never did.

    This would also be about the time Jean Chauncey VanEpps was ill with polio. Boy, those last names show up a lot in this work.
