A bright day but east wind cold. Will hauled a load of corn to hogs across the creek and hauled alfalfa and hay. I finished Will’s shirt and in eve mopped kitchen and Will went to thaw out pump but it froze.

1933 Feb. 23rd Thursday

A very nice forenoon, p.m. east wind and some clouds in eve. Wm chored and Ben came and they drove a broncho and in p.m. went to Moore Creek and Harry Furrey’s mare has a broken leg. I got meals. Wm got in water so I washed clothes and dried what I got washed but couldn’t finish because I got too tired so gathered cobs in eve. Wm chored late for Will is still away to Dixon, S.D. Linfred Martin brought back single-tree he borrowed.

1943 Feb. 23rd Tuesday

Cloudy cold Northwest wind, and snow fell last night and at times spitted some to-day. After choring, Mr. & Mrs. Wm Abbott came so Will and I and they went to Robert Gibson Sale Near Jim Dowd’s and was large crowd. Van Epps went and W.D. came home to chore and bring a small steel cupboard they bought and Sarah, Sterling, Elsie and Billy were there with Mrs. Gehlsen & children, so came back there and W.D. got them in eve. Margie staid at Abbotts last night and Cora Ann went to school to-day. Abbotts home at once after sale.

1953 Feb. 23rd Monday

Bright, nice day and thawed some. Men gave cattle hay and after dinner Dan took Cat and Dozer, Will Pick-Up, and they went to Bridge East [of] Whiting Store and Will on to get mail but no records yet. Betty washed clothes and put on line. She and Calvin came up late p.m. when Will coming from Hidden Timber got stuck East of House and Dan pushed him Up Hill. I sewed on Dresses, am getting them nearing completion. Played solitaire and Read some as Men got mail and Will mailed letters.

Jan. 22, 1943: We play cards in the evenings, 500 and pitch

1923 Jan. 22nd Monday

A nice day but chilly. Mrs. C. Sherlock and Mother and I went to Langans and staid from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Will did work, went to town to folks for dinner and in eve went to Langan with Ableidingers and staid until 11 p.m.

Bright but N.W. breeze was cool. Wm chored at 6 to 7 o’clock this morning then he and I went to 8:30 a.m. Mass. Fr. Martin went up at 7 a.m. Will is still sick but had a lot [of] company. Ben, Otto, Jay Tate, Mr. Sazama and George, Pete Neiss and Son came to look at Ed’s Car and went on to Ed’s. Narvin Boyd came also. Kenneth Whiting and Wm went along to Boyds also John Sundquist. I got meals and wrote letters.

Was zero at morning, some clouds but no snow and sun shone dimly, got to 20 above in afternoon and back to zero at bedtime. Wm Van Epps and Henry chored, also fed cattle at Wagner Shed and Van Epps went to Claude Van Epps and got 3 old sows, took them to Winner Sale Pavilion and sold them, got some lumber for himself and us and 1790 lbs. coal for us and was home before bed-time. Henry chored for Will had a bad cold so didn’t do much but fed chickens and staid indoors. Elsie and I got meals, she washed Billie’s clothes and cleaned upstairs and I swept floors. I sewed on black every-day dress. We play cards in the evenings, 500 and pitch.

Bright so we gave cattle hay and then went in our Pick Up to around Highway South [of] here by Bridge west [of] here, got stuck 2 times so finally went to Stanleys. Pearl and Stanley were lunching on Homemade Chili so Will took a bowl full but Dan no do. He came home hungry for late eats in p.m. The Men were going to Abbotts to see if they to get a bull at Sale that Abbott got 7 miles east [of] Mosher yesterday but no get there. Usual Pastime and eats for me and I sew on quilt blocks. Betty was up.

January 12, 1923: Papa was worse

1923 Jan. 12th Friday.

A little cloudy at times forenoon but in afternoon bright. Will did up work and went to Railroad track and begged tobacco from Walden, section foreman, and cleaned hog-house. In p.m. we caught ducks and chickens and took to James, and William took team and went on out after Louise at L— school-house and Will did trading and I staid at folks. I canned 10 qts apples in a.m. Papa was worse, couldn’t raise hand to mouth.

Bright and chilly. Will did the work and went to Ben Fitch’s and bought a load of shell-corn in p.m. and John Davis and Wilbur Fitch brought it down in eve. Wm has the Flu. I got meals and am all in also but we staid up until 11:30 p.m. as Mr & Mrs. Tate and Richard, Mr. & Mrs. Jerry Karnes, Bobby & Junior and Otto Rothley here in eve.

Frosty morning, sun shone until p.m. some clouds. Elsie and I got meals, she swept floors, ironed clothes, washed kitchen windows. I baked 3 apple-pies, had such a cough couldn’t rest in p.m. so wrote in diary. Men chored, worked at Wagner Floor. W.D. went to Whiting Store to go to Wood for lumber. Ray, Mrs. Marjorie & Baby looked [at] hay-sweep on way to McCormick’s. Shorty Webster came looking for horses to buy.

1953 Jan. 12th Monday.

Bright day. Dan and Will called cattle to River Pasture and caked them for there are a lot [of] Stack Butts to feed them for a couple days. They [had] a lunch then went in our Pick Up to North Haukaas School House where Dan’s and Thomas’s were yesterday. They asked Bus who was going to Paulsons to side a Shed on his Tractor so they all [went] to Paulson’s, got Clarence and he rode in cab with Will. Dan and Bus stood up in Rack. They got Will 2 Perch, Dan 7, Clarence 12, Bus 15 and they gave them to Dan and Will so we will divide to-morrow for a fry. They put them in Tank for now. Betty came up this p.m. for some meat.

New Year’s Day: Lime Jello salad with lettuce, celery and strawberries

1923 Jan. 1st Monday.

Bright in forenoon but cloudy in p.m. and a little snow fell in eve. Will went to Nelsons to see Elmer about storing corn in granary but they [would] rather haul. After work [was] finished we went up town to get William but Louise not home he didn’t come out[.] Louise was at Angels for New Years dinner.

Bright, nice day. The men chored and Narvin Boyd came and he and Wm tried to get some fish. Ben also Ralph Walton and they with Will went to River but no fish so men visited in p.m. Narve & Wm got in stock that Will & Ben put in field in a.m. and boys went to Rossville in eve and Wm came back in time for supper. I got meals and had a little extra.

1943 Jan. 1st Friday.

Sun shone and a south breeze after frosty night so the wind dried clothes nicely, left out last night so Elsie Van Epps got them in, in afternoon and we folded them. She washed some of Billie’s clothes. I got meals, baked an Angel-Food cake and Elsie frosted it. I also cooked a cocoanut cream pudding, laid down in p.m. and got real sick after supper because I ate too rich beef gravy but milk of magnesia tablets got me well in a hurry. Mrs. Abbott and Elsie washed dishes last [evening] and she did again this eve so it is nice. Will, and W.D. took Mrs. Wm Abbott home after supper last eve just as the Family were coming for her. This New Years Day, Will & W.D. worked at East Side Wagner garage siding it and put in a window Frame and will got mail in eve and went to drive cattle to Shed as it clouded got foggy and looked real threatening to snow. They also fixed fence south side Wisenburger Pasture and W.D. put some cows back that were on Hay-meadow. We never saw anyone besides us this New Years Day but may go to Tom’s Sunday to a Wedding Anniversary party.

1953. Jan 1st Thursday.

New Years Day and bright, nice. I cooked the Duck Abbotts gave us for Christmas, made gravy, Mashed Potatoes. A Salad with Betty’s help of mixing and she brought cream that Thomas brought them last night. Betty chilled the Jello Lime, put in Lettuce & Celery and Topped in her Salad dish with Salad dressing & Cream & put Sliced Strawberries on top [of] the white layer for decoration also shredded cheese in first part. Had banana cake, Ice-Cream with lot of Strawberries on Top. We played Canasta or Samba in p.m. and Wales took enough eats for their supper. Also we played 500 and lost to Men. Abbotts were to come so we fixed table for 8 but they no come so made it small for us to play cards on. Thomas’s are going to Joe Lolley’s to eat New Years dinner and wear everything they got for Christmas, so Doris said last eve.

New Year’s Eve: Night was as bright as day so the Children played outside

1922 Dec. 31st Sunday.

Was a bright day but breeze that was a little cool. Messrs. Kelley Martin, Geo. Krikac, Howard Broadstreet came hunting and Will went along for awhile. I started to pick out some goods in National and Will went to Nelson’s to see about buying corn which they [will] shell Tuesday. Paul Meyers came to see folks between trains yesterday.

1932 Dec. 31st Saturday

South west breeze, bright and not so cold for Men got water and I washed towels & Dish-towels and a few pieces and got them on line with-out freezing also got meals, mopped floors and ironed some clothes. Will & Roy put hay in barn and fed stock. Wm looked at traps and fixed hog-house.

1942 Dec. 31st Thursday.

Not one bit of breeze so still, cloudy and frosty in morning, sun came out awhile towards eve but no stay out of the clouds, so Mrs. Wm Abbott put her clothes in basket to take home from the line in eve as they were frozen and left ours out for the night. Wm Van Epps chored and filled washing machine and boiler and after breakfast [was] over, he and Will [went] to Valentine to get Elsie and Billy who have been at Omaha, Nebr. with Rita and Chloe her sisters[,] their husbands are in England and Alaska so they live together but first Elsie and Billie [were] at Rochester, Minn. to Mayo Clinic to see what could be done for Billie’s head but nothing until he is older. They had dinner at Bud’s Cafe[,] Valentine, exchanged windows for 1 gottten for Wagner Shed[,] was too Big. Will paid the bill and Fullerton Lumber Co. for Material to fix Wagner House. Wm Abbott and Billie brought Mrs. over as we finished getting ready to eat breakfast so Mr. and Billie went home to husk corn and Mrs. and I got clothes on the line, she put on white[,] I rinsed. Buster and Son Calvin Cutschall came after lunch [,] went to Tom Colombe’s and back to see Will in eve. Ben Clausen came to look at Catalogues for a saddle in p.m.

1952 Dec. 31st Wednesday.

Forenoon not so warm and some clouds but p.m. Bright and warm. Bus McKee came in his Pick Up, got the Sprayer and went to Jim Drains to spray their cattle for Lice. Will left in our Pick Up to go to Earl Willards, 5 miles North and 1 1/2 East of Mission. Met Jim Drain with a load of Ear Corn going to have it weighed at Mission and he told Will that Will could get a load of Willards Corn and he would take his second load later for there may not be 3 full loads so instead [of] getting a Medium Size Truck Will got Buettners Smaller one and they went out[,] got 72 bu. 40 lbs Ear Corn at Willards[,] brought it here[,] unloaded and got Millards Check and said Will to pay Ernest Buettner for Trucking. This [is the] eve of New Years so Wales went to Thomas’s to have them some this eve to wait Old Year out. Pearl and Stanley went to Colome, S. D. to a Knights [of] Columbus Dance and Gary, Curly and Eileen staid at Thomas’s so they came with them Down here. Night was as bright as day so the Children played outside. Hide & Seek etc. but first Thomas and Athel took Jimmie with them to Wales. Doris, David, Gary, Curly and Eileen and I played Canasta or Samba girls against boys. The boys won as we played short game and they [had] to go to Wales about 10 p.m. Will and I had a lunch at 10:30 p.m. Bus brought the Sprayer home and ate venison Chili No Beans[,] Ice Cream, Banana Cake, Bananas, Bread Butter and Strawberries from Furreys Christmas Gifts.
