in Misc. Diary Entry

April 1 in Boyd County Nebraska

Note: Hattie and Will lived about a mile from Spencer, Nebraska in the years after their marriage until the latter part of 1923, when they moved to Todd County, South Dakota. These entries are all from the Nebraska years.

April 1, 1920: Was cloudy and cold this morning, started to snow at about 9 o’clock and was a regular blizzard for awhile until about 2 p.m., so we had a nap. Will hauled a load of cobs, put them in bin. He went after eli at Clausen’s, left it at Knolls, brought Spreader home. Howard helped him. I didn’t do much work as I am feeling not so well, but started to fix my jacket suit.

April 1, 1921: Was a very warm bright day. Will worked on baby-chick house until Billie came at 11 p.m., then they tried to get engine to work until noon, but couldn’t so in p.m. dug post holes for hog pasture until supper time. I started to lathe partitions in baby-chick house. In evening we took Billie to Spencer as there is a play by High School Juniors, “What Happened to Jones.”

April 1, 1922: Was a bright warm day but cloudy in forenoon and p.m. was nice. Will fixed ties floor in hog shanty and put sand on them, got a load of straw at Bosek’s and went to Wards, got a gate and trough. I went along to Wards. Will had a headache all day and a cold. I baked bread and pie and sewed some and mopped.

April 1, 1923: Easter Sunday. A bright day until towards evening cloudy. South wind cool in a.m. but afternoon quite warm. We did up work and Will started to trim those few cherry trees and cut his hand. William Whiting came out about 11:30 a.m. and he and Will went for a ride in the afternoon via Ableidingers, Chas. Clouse and via Dist. 14 school house and on home. I just read and did a little work after.
