July 18: Boiled Beef To Beat the Band

~ Boyd County, Nebraska

July 18, 1922: A bright day except clouds in N. W. at noon. Will and Charles cut grain when Binder was working. Dave and Phoebe, Mary, Jeanette and Harriet left for home. I went as far as folks. Met Will on return on way to town after Binder repair. Oh my! I brought apples from orchard, first sauce of season. Dave took some. After walking home, I was tired so rested.

~ Hidden Timber, South Dakota

July 18: 1929: Bright, cool day. We got in at midnight from Hidden Timber movies where there was a large crowd, and we feel tired today, but Dave cut oats and Will shocked. Roy finished corn out here eliing, and went to Moore Creek in p.m., but no good, so came in early. Louise sewed and darned socks, and in the evening visited Harry Furrey, and the girls washed dishes and Will took them to B. Wagners, and Nellie, Mary, Harriet and Jeanette practices songs with Madeline Wagner, and Will got them in the evening.

I just got meals, and Ed, Leo, Charlotte and Clarence brought some beef and liver, so I cold-packed 5 jars as the girls helped me get ready, also cooked liver and boiled beef to beat the band. Ben Fitch and the Mrs. and some relatives to see Dave about living in his house, if the Mrs. got Whiting school.

July 18, 1947: Bright, hot day, but sometimes a breeze in the south was cool, and changed to N.E. and still nice when it blew. Will and I went about 7:30 a.m. to Valentine, took mower hitch to have one for rake like this, but had to get one for smaller tractor, and Jackson couldn’t fix it, so a Strong Blacksmith by name of Louie fixed the hitch, but Will and I had to take him to Jackson Tractor Service twice to measure on a Farmall there, and at last we had to have Jackson Service for Tractors make a plate of iron for the rake hitch.
