June 9: Whiskers, His Dog but My Pal

~ Hidden Timber, South Dakota

June 9, 1929: Harry Furrey here today. Harry and Louise went away in p.m.

June 9, 1933: I had a Memory list of the Diary, and copied it into this book, and I find Miss Louise Scott said that it would be some time before she forgot me, and wrote the following in my diary: “When leaves forget sunshine and flowers forget dew, when angels forget heaven, then I’ll forget you. Mrs. Louise Scott, Parmelee, South Dakota.”

June 9, 1944: This is our Mother’s Birthday, buried at Spencer, Nebraska.

June 9, 1946: Furreys came before noon, and Dorothy’s 14th Birthday Cake was good, 3 layers, 1 chocolate, 1 white, 1 red or Pink, and chocolate icing with white candles. I was glad she brought it for us to eat here.

June 9, 1954: Sun shone but a terrific south wind. Bus and Lew McKee came in pickup and were trying to fix the front springs on our pickup, but could not, so Bus and Will went in our Mercury to Valentine, had dinner, there, got spring for front of pickup and Bus put it in while Lew and Will looked at a side-delivery rake.

Dan came in his car, got our saddle horses, went to get his cattle out of pasture to pen. Lew in his pick-up helped him. They got our chute at Abbotts, came by west bridge to tell Bud, but he was coming here, had Bobbie, with him. He got stuck at hill between us and Tenant house. Cat pulled him out with Bus as driver.

Dan took home most of his jars piled in boxes near our basement door, also took a white kitten and Whiskers, his dog but my pal, also Will’s, for when Will went in Pick Up he always rode along. This evening I am lost entirely when it comes to scraps to feed Whiskers, but I will get used to putting them with chicken feed. I am trying to quit Solitaire because my left side was numb, especially the arm, so am afraid of paralysis.
