June 7: A Surprise on Wm Whiting

~ Hidden Timber, South Dakota

June 7, 1928: Bright most of day except for a few clouds and a sprinkle followed by a strong N. W. wind, and a beautiful rainbow.

Louise fixed her clothes, also the girls worked at their clothes and washed all their heads, and Louise and Nellie stayed indoors, and Mary, Jeanette, Harriet and I went with Will to seine, and he went around the stock, so we finished, also in a.m. he got drill at John Winsenbergers.

Ben and Dave went to plow for cane at Dave’s and took lunch for dinner. I just did ordinary work and hoed fruit trees, and when we were fishing, I got stalled on a steep sand bank, and a river below, so couldn’t move and was nearly frightened to death. Harriet and Jeanette braced me and ran for help. Mr. and Mrs. Curt Elshire were going by, so he pulled me out, and all evening I had laugh-spells and would cry when I was alone.

June 7, 1931, Sunday: Harry, Louise and Harley came, so Harry and Wm went up in Harry’s car to Parmelee and Hidden Timber ball-game, and Noah Wright came on horse-back, so he went with Will, Louise, Harley and I.

June 7, 1933 (written from Rosebud Hospital): Was cool after a rain but bright and only a few clouds in p.m., a north breeze. Nora Antoine visited me, also the same bunch, and Will came in p.m., as he, Wm and Narvin are batching out home. Louise is baking bread and cookies, and Will is going by to get them. The Hidden Timber ball team went to Kewanee and got beat Sunday, so Will said. Revival Meetings at Whiting School house attracting attention. I was lonesome when Will got ready to go home, so I cried, but I am also tired of lying still and cannot move.

June 7, 1942: Went to St. Francis, S. D., to Jake Whiting’s, where we had a surprise on Wm Whiting as he leaves for Omaha, Nebr., June 16th to enter Army, if he can pass exams.

For eats, we all brought something, so had potato salads, 2 kinds, bread, fresh butter, jell, coffee, nice cream, chicken and noodles, chicken pie, beef, baked beans, boiled bean with chili mixture, Jello, cake, cookies and a lunch at 4 p.m. of minced ham, bologna sandwiches, coffee, cream, cookes and marshmallows.

Louise Furrey took our group picture and Nellie Brandon took Wm, Jake, Tom, Nellie, Louise and I (Harriet’s group picture, Ed, other Living Brother, was driving cattle for Wm Lynas from Winner to Vivian, S. D., so was not there).
