April 4: A Beautiful Easter Day

~ Boyd County, Nebraska
1911:
Postmarked March, 30, 1911, from Louise (Hattie’s youngest sibling), age 8, in Spencer, Nebraska, to her mother, Mrs. Ed Whiting, Carter, S.Dak, who was visiting family.

Dear Mother,

How are you getting along? When are you coming home? We are all going up to Miss Ridgeway Box Social tomorrow night.

From Louise

1920: This is a beautiful Easter day but a little chilly. Mrs. Knoll, Willie, Marjorie, Will and I had dinner at Bradstreets consisting of Roast Pork and Dressing, Potatoes, Chicken and Noodles, Bread, Butter, Pickles, Pineapple salad, Mince Pie and Angel Food Cake, Coffee, Milk and Hot water.

~ Hidden Timber, South Dakota

1930: Bright, nice until in middle of p.m., then a regular dust storm from N. W., lasted an hour or so. Nell and I washed the clothes and got them out about an hour before the dust storm, so we brought them right in and gathered cobs and got the meals. Will tried to Rotary Hoe alfalfa, but too much wind.

Lisa’s Note: Learn more about the inventor of the Rotary Hoe.

1943: Harry liked rutabagas I had cooked with beef, and I am glad.

1945: I got meals and fried hams, put it in jars and covered with lard and sealed it, also cooked the lard. I cooked the lard on the oil-stove yesterday and nearly finished. I have to cut the meat, and it is a job, and to fry it also, but Will wanted it salted at Winner, so he won’t help.

1955: Harry, Louise, Harley and Billie were here this p.m. Mary was at 4H at Carter.

1957: The boys were glad to go to Donkey Basket Ball at Mission Hall, and all the fun they had, such as 25 boys piled their shoes at west end of Hall, and went to east side, then the man giving the orders said the first one to get to the shoes, put on laces, and get back to the stage got 50 cents. Several pieces of money were given. Was a lot of fun.
