Jan. 18, 1923: Papa is in bed all the time since Tuesday

1923 Jan. 18th Thursday

The wind blew terribly around midnight and was warm, morning still and a lovely day. Will hauled a load corn & alfalfa over the river and I went along, he scooped a load cobs on wagon and unloaded and we got ready and Will went to Dean Dorthy Sale and I staid at folks and help[ed] care for Papa as he is in bed all the time since Tuesday.

1933 Jan. 18th Wednesday

Bright but near noon a real strong south-west wind and dust-storm was so thick got hazy and couldn’t see far, clouded also but a clear eve. The men chored and Will doesn’t feel good so Wm chored in eve. I got meals and not much else until eve gathered cobs in N.W. breeze for it changed and got cold. Will went to field and got cattle although he felt bad while Wm chored and Will brought in cobs after I sacked them.

1943 Jan. 18th Monday

Was 20 below last night so I kept fire now 2 nights as temperatures dropped Saturday. Sun shone but never got to more than 8 below, was so quiet. Elsie washed clothes for Billie and she hung them out late p.m. to freeze in a hurry. She and Will got breakfast for I kept fire last night and had a coughing spell at 3 and 7 a.m. and we went to bed at 12:15 a.m. so not much rest. I was all in so laid in bed until 9:30 a.m. Elsie washed lunch dish from last night and breakfast ones together. She swept floors also. I got a dinner of boiled meat and dried corn. We had plenty [of] pie and Potatoes from yesterday for dinner. Abbotts staid until near midnight last night after others left for home so Elsie showed Will and I how to play 500. W. L. and I against Mrs. W. L. and Will. I think we can play it now. W.D., Henry, Claude and Mrs. played Pinochle at the other table. Billie, Delores and Viola Van Epps played Chinese Checkers and after lunch Elsie, Mrs. W. L. and I played Pitch and the others Chinese Checkers. Billie V. E. and Cora Ann played with Billy’s toys. Henry and W.D. fed cattle and W.D. gave them Sudan. They went to Wagner House. Henry fixed chairs in a.m.

1953 Jan. 18th Sunday

Bright, nice until in Middle p.m. began to cloud and snowing about 4 p.m. Continued in eve. Men gave cattle hay and Will didn’t do much indoor work but we played Canasta in p.m. and eve. Dan went to River Pasture in Our Pick Up and drove all the cattle back to near home and shut East from here to River Pasture so Cattle came to Corral and South Trees South House and Under Hill where Men put 3 Stacks Old Hay from Strids some time lately. I washed some dishes but not much cleaning as I don’t feel good either. Men use Electric Pump to give cattle water in Wales yard.
