March 20, 1948: The Count Changes with the Moon

Bright, nice, warm day until towards evening when it clouded and the ground was covered with snow before we went to bed at 9 p.m., but it was warm, so we turned the oil heater out. Joe chored and Will looked at a heifer, then he and Billie Abbott said that the nozzle for the sprayer was there. Wm and Billie came with their cattle to spray at about 7:30 a.m., then Lew and Bus came in their pick-up, and the men sprayed for grubs, Abbott cattle first, and our cows and Joe’s. Abbott took his home before noon and came back with his car. In the afternoon he took Bus, Lew McKee and Joe in his car. Billie Abbott took our Ford tractor and sprayer to Abbotts, and sprayed 4 bulls, 7 cows and 10 calves, and here 114 were sprayed, and Joe’s 8 cows and 197 head of our cows. I hope some day as time rolls on we can have an accurate count of our cattle. The count changes with the moon. Elva and I got dinner of roast beef, mashed potatoes, baked beans, gravy, dill pickles, salad, lemon-pie. Joe and Elva stayed for supper.
