~ Hidden Timber, South Dakota

November 13, 1924, Thursday: Was a bright day and warmer. Will did up chores. Mr. Smith came on foot as he hurt his hand, so Will and I went to Smiths, got load of things and coal and butter. They men got in at midnight for had bad luck on trip to Winner, first no gas, broke fan-belt, punctured tire, ran out of water and had to walk to get relief. Miss Winne went to school and I ordinary work and cleaned one room upstairs and Will cleaned the basement.

November 13, 1927, Sunday: A cold, cloudy day. Bess and Louise came at 10 o’clock with Earl Adrian’s, and he went on to his place near Parmelee, near Rosebud, and back here for supper.

November 13, 1929, Wednesday: Bright, nice day. Snow thawed and some mud and water. After a flat tire and terrible roads we got to St. Francis at or about mid-night, and Wes and Wm Whiting came up to Jake’s, so Dave went with them to Meeting House near the church, as Neva’s body was there, also Florence and Rena went, and Tommy and I went to sleep on a cot at Jake’s. Cora broke her leg three weeks ago, so can go only on crutches and her leg is crooked above the knee on the left side.

Neva died at 7:30 a.m. at home Monday morning, Nov. 11th, Armistice Day of anemia which she ailed of since last winter, and it turned into T.B. She was buried at St. Francis Cemetery after Requiem Mass at 9 o’clock by Fr. Warth, four or five graves from Helen’s, towards the gate.

November 13, 1938, Sunday: Will and I went to Furreys, got there for dinner. Roger Deitz was there. He is staying at Fred Nelson’s and teaching the Bailey School. Claude Sully brought his saddle horse so Harry could use it this winter, so Will, Harley, Dorothy, Harry, and Roger took Claude home. Will bought some posts from Sully, 100 of them. We came home to Wm Abbotts, and Narvin wasn’t there, so we got him at home, for Wm Abbott, Delores, Billie, and Sam Boyd took Narvin and a calf he bought from us to his home in Abbotts’ pick-up. Narvin and his father were alone for the others went to Rosebud to see Ella at the Hospital.
