November 10: Blue on Account of Old Manure

~ Boyd County, Nebraska

November 10, 1922: A little bright all day but towards evening a cloud in N. W. looked threatening. A warm south wind until p.m. N. W. and colder. Dr. John Schmela vaccinated pigs over the river for the Flu. In p.m. we husked corn and Will hauled alfalfa to hogs.

~ Hidden Timber, South Dakota

November 10, 1932, Thursday: Cloudy, cold N.W. wind quite strong and a few flakes of snow. It was too cold in the kitchen to wash dishes, but I managed to anyway and got three meals. Will hauled cane to cattle and then hauled manure around the house. Wm picked up wood, boards and posts and hauled some in. I mended Will’s overalls, also am blue on account of old manure again.

November 10, 1934, Saturday: Cold, chilly N.W. breeze, sun bright. Elmer went to the pasture, brought in Ben’s cow and calf after he bunched cattle so Will could give them cake, and in p.m. Elmer got in another cow to milk and helped Henry and Fritz butcher a small pig in the evening. Will and Henry and Fritz fixed the barnyard fence in a.m., and Henry and Fritz pulled the hog-wire loose on the west side of alfalfa in p.m. After giving cattle cake, Will went to Chaunceys and had threads cut on a rod for a wind-mill, had dinner there, then he and Mr. fixed windmill rod, went to O’Kreek, had tapets fixed on our car. Will was home for supper.

Maggie cleaned downstairs and got the meals. I went to the store room and fixed junk some, and burnt some in a bon-fire, cooked some cranberries and apples and canned 1 gallon of apple juice, gathered 2 pails of nails.
