November 5: Our Future President Will Be Ike Eisenhower

~ Boyd County, Nebraska

November 5, 1921: Was a nice day and warm. The men husked until noon, then Will, Mr. Wilson and I went in the wagon to Spencer and William on horseback. We came back in time to get supper so had fried rabbit as William got one in cornfield.

November 5, 1927, Saturday: Sun shone only awhile mid-day, as it snowed early morning and was cloudy late p.m. and quite damp. Will drove the Wm Smith cattle east of the house, and after he helped Tom, Thomas, Stanley and Harold vaccinate their calves, he then got in Smith’s cattle and some at C. Eshlire’s. I made bread and Louise cleaned rooms, and she and I made a cake, and she ironed the week’s washing, and I made apple-jelly and the meals.

November 5, 1933, Sunday: I combed my hair down and rolled it on my neck, the first time since last May 29th, for Miss Grabel combed it in 2 braids, and Miss Bolken fixed it with a side part, and I kept it that way all summer and fall.

November 5, 1934, Monday: Bright, nice after a few clouds early a.m. Fritz spent the week at Lattimores. Henry is at home and Elmer is here. We went to the Farewell at the Hall for Pete Sinclair and family, so got in at 1 a.m. and we are all in today. The Sells Family and Mary Gehlsen stopped at the Party, also, and Elmer took Mary Sells to Carrs after the party.

Will got our hogs home and penned them in the barn, then he and I went to the store, mailed letters, got some groceries, and on our return, Will fixed fence at hay-lot, slept awhile in p.m., and stacked the hay the boys hauled in. Maggie baked bread and did all the other work and made pies. I wrote in diaries, wiped supper dishes, played solitaire, and sewed on another everyday dress.

November 5, 1944, Sunday: Sun shone and was chilly, southeast breeze changed to south, was strong and dusty in p.m. when Will and I went to St. Francis to a Birthday Party for Sidney Whiting’s 25th Birthday.

November 5, 1952, Wednesday: Will never saw anyone to ask about Election Returns, but this morning we heard Ike Eisenhower thank Adlai Stevenson for the congratulations he sent him for getting all U.S. states but 9, so our future president will be Ike Eisenhower, and V. P. Richard Nixon, California. I don’t know much else about the Election, not even if the 18 year old young men get to vote now.

November 5, 1956, Monday: Whitings are here this evening for the boys to play cards, and we do with a good time at Samba and Pitch. Frankie came up for this and that, so we visited. Will can’t hear so won’t talk to me, and when someone does, I talk and talk but no good anyway.
