October 5: He Will Be Ready to Move to Pine Ridge

~ Boyd County, Nebraska

October 5, 1922: Another warm day and south wind, until towards evening changed to N. W. After choring, Louise and I cleaned the front room. I mended overalls while she washed windows, then I ironed curtains and she mopped. Knudsons watered horses. Mr. B. Ellsworth, Mamma and Loretta Langan came in evening.

October 5, 1928, Friday: Bright, but wind blew in p.m. and was colder, but a.m. was nice. Louise went to school and went to Cory’s to see if she could stay or rather board awhile until Buster Cutschall moves out to his place near the school, and she could, so she came home late evening.

There are so many folks wanting Dave’s place to rent, and 2 were here today, and one was Ray Carr and some other folks, but Dave did not rent.

George and Florence Clifford, son Tommy and Marjorie Janis, whose mother is May Janis, were here this afternoon and went home late p.m., or nearly at sundown. They went back to Rosebud as their home is at Scenic, S.D., or 20 miles from there at the foot of the bad lands, and they told us how wonderful it was up there, good water, free range and cheap land and good crops to those who farm, so I guess when Will sees this, he will be ready to move to Pine Ridge.

October 5, 1935, Saturday: Fritz chored, but he could scarcely walk, so Will took him to Winner in p.m., and Dr. Walters lanced a gash on his right leg, above the ankle, and cleaned the bone that had been bruised by falling on a cement block at the hay-mow door.

October 5, 1936, Monday: Bright, nice day. Lemoyne rode to the Big Pasture, and Thomas hauled hay, and in p.m. Will, Lemoyne and I went to McKee’s, and found the Rahn 2 yr. old black horse and left it there. We took a battery to O’Kreek, came home via Hidden Timber, and the World Series ball-games are on, so the men asked about the score. Also got a present for Jo Gehlsen’s shower at Hutchinson’s tomorrow and sent it by Mr. Hutchinson. I can’t talk loud, but it did me good to go out in the fresh air.

October 5, 1946, Saturday: Cloudy, rainy, cold day, in fact at times a regular downpour. Will chored, and after breakfast went to McKee’s to help fix hay sled, and he didn’t come home until near dark. Was I frightened for fear he tipped or skidded over in the mud, and just as I was most undecided what to do, he came home.
