September 8: New Mission High School Buildings

~ Hidden Timber, South Dakota

September 8, 1927, Thursday: A bright, hot day. We did up the work, and Louise and I canned 15 quarts of crab apples that we got from R. E. Cady from Cady Store, sold by Mr. Henderson of north Bassett. Mr. and Mrs. Lattimore, Ivan and Melvin came in evening. The men butchered a hog last evening, so I fried and roasted it to-day and salted some. Henry went around stock and the men worked at hay, not early on account of dampness early morning and a little foggy, but a bright day.

September 8, 1931: Will and I took Karnes Family to Log Cabin, O’Kreek where Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Neilsen of Colome, S. D. and a Mr. Olson of Iowa were Present. It was 110 in the shade to-day, so right warm. Mrs. Grethal (Clarence) Neilsen is our Dist. President of Dist. No. 9, so gave us an outline of Rapid City Convention, as she was as much disappointed as were the Lady Members and Delegates of Dist. 9 for having only a Decorated Table, and no place to sit at Banquet Table, but had to mix here and there with other Tables.

September 8, 1934, Saturday: The wind was so strong and dusty that the men couldn’t stack thistles, so they went to Chauncey’s and fixed Elmer’s car, had dinner there, came back via Ben’s, got a tube for Fritz’s car. On return Will and Elmer went to Misson to list E. J. Van Epps’ cattle, Thermopolis, Wyo., c/o Padlock Ranch, to sell, and came back for supper.

September 8, 1937, Wednesday: Lee Larmer and George Haukaas came this forenoon, and Lee got his clothes packed and put them in a suit-case, and stored what he didn’t take with them with Nellie’s things. He left again with George Haukaas to go to California with Boyd from Omaha.

September 8, 1940, Sunday: Bright, quite warm until it clouded and rained in the afternoon, and a nice evening. I got up at 4:30, washed dishes, got breakfast, and was ready to go to Spencer, Nebraska, to Old Settlers Picnic. Will got ready also and Seth trimmed his hair. Seth chored both morning and night, and he and family went to Mission for the day. Tom and Sadie came in their Ford Mercury, 4 Door Sedan, and Will and I went along to Spencer, stopped at Outlaw Store, Winner, to get cash, flashlight, batteries, tip for my cane, then to Burke, S.D., where we had root-beer and the men coffee.

Got to Spencer via Butte, Nebr. We went to Community Hall, Spencer, Nebraska, registered and had a picnic lunch. There was a band concert of Butte and Spencer juniors combined, a program of songs, reading, talks by Crist Anderson (Pres.), Pete Nelson, Marshall, Frank Post, Mr. Mcquistan of Gross, Nebr., Tom Whiting, Hidden Timber, S.D. A lot of Old Timers were there, as well as newer ones.

After visiting awhile with folks at the Hall, we went to Whiting Bridge and Spencer Dam, had pop there. Saw our old Whiting home west of the dam. It is a terrible run place, orchard all gone. After leaving Angels, we got gas at Spencer, ice-cream at Bonesteel, S.D., hamburger at Winner, S.D., home here at 12 o’clock midnight, and Tom and Sadie went on home, right to bed. This is Dave’s 53rd Birthday. May he rest in peace.

September 8, 1947, Monday: Will and I went to Mission, where we saw Van Epps, Tates, Henry Sells, Wm Pierce and everyone bringing children to school, especially High School. The New Buildings are across Antelope Creek, South of town, and the buildings are a dormitory and school. The dormitory and dining room are made out of galvanized tin and rounded roofs to the ground.
