April 21: Guess I Have To Get a Television

~ Hidden Timber, South Dakota

1931: I made bread, and a cold north wind, so slow rising

1935: Will did a lot of jobs in a.m., emptied ashes, put potatoes and smoked meat in the cellar, and helped me with breakfast dishes, made ice-cream, got in a lot of water. This is Easter Sunday, and the Furrey Family went to O’Kreek, but there was no church, so came back home, ate breakfast, finished chores, came over here for dinner, for I dressed a chicken that Will got me, roasted it, baked a cake, mopped the front room and kitchen floors. Fritz came in p.m., and he will help Lattimores this coming week. Furreys and us to School Picnic and Kitten-ball, then more ice-cream.

1947: Cloudy and threatened to rain or snow, and a strong Northwest breeze. Wm Abbott, Mrs. Wm Abbott and Bus and Lew McKee came, so Levi had the yearlings in the Barn yard and they soon got to work dehorning, and put ID on right Hip and R on Right Neck, this on about 60 heifers. ID is for Indian Department and R for Rosebud Dist., this is to locate them to me, Hattie Whiting Whitcher, so I can hold the grass in our pasture and not to competitive bid.

1957: Our Easter eats weren’t much, but I fried pork chops for noon lunch and steak in evening. Wished all the time someone would come, but no one did but home folks. Guess I have to quit wishing for someone to come, and get a television.
