March 20: Joseph Zangara & National Barn Dance

~ Hidden Timber, South Dakota
1933: Bright, chilly day, a north breeze. I washed a few dish towels, and they froze, but wind switched them out dry, except where clothes pins hung. I also got meals and started to sew together some tobacco sacks to put over lard jars. Wm and Narvin drove broncos and fed stock alfalfa and did most chores, for Will and Ben came, so they went to Winner and home early evening, for Will could do no business today. Luiferd Martin’s baby died and will be buried at Winner tomorrow. Joseph Zangara, who attempted to kill Pres. Elect Roosevelt and shot Mayor Anton Cermak of Chicago at Miami, Florida, Feb. 15th, and Cermak died March 6th, was electrocuted in Florida this a.m., 10 o’clock.

1937: A beautiful bright day. Nell and I got meals and we cleaned front room and kitchen, and I assorted papers and she put up the curtains and cared for chickens. Thomas chored, took cattle out to hay land, and brought in a yearling colt that was sick, and he doped it with ginger, sugar, red pepper and water, but it is not better, so in evening he gave it some linseed oil. Moses Eagle Feather, his brother and father-in-law, Wm Lone Wolf, came in evening for lease money, so I paid the spring payment for it. I am tired this evening, so went to bed, and Nell and Thomas heard a nice play over the radio after the National Barn Dance.

LISA’S NOTES: From March 27th, 1933 TIME Magazine: “Executed. Joe Zangara, 33, assassin of Chicago’s Mayor Anton Joseph Cermak; at 9:17 a. m. March 20 in the State Prison electric chair in Raiford, Fla. In the death room he spat, ‘Lousy capitalists. No scared of chair. . . . What! Nobody take pictures?’ He half-said, ‘Good-by,’ when the current jolted through him.”

  1. “hogs out of canyons.” I’m able to get a mental picture of this, but wonder if Harley can shed additional light on the practices which made this necessary.
